Mattresses that You Should Definitely Consider Buying

Mattresses are such underrated pieces of furniture. I say that because when you think about it, it is the most used piece of furniture in our homes. We spend as much as a third of our day laying on one or 1/4 if we are pressed for time due to busy school or work schedules. If you are thinking of buying a new mattress, don’t buy one without doing some reading and looking out for the best product. You will thank yourself later when you get the best mattress for your money and if you get a dud, you will regret it if there is no return policy.

One of the things that you should do when you are about to buy a mattress is to read online mattress reviews. The best mattresses will always have reviews online and these reviews will help you in your search for a new mattress. Mattress review sites such as mattressreviewshq.net, reviews from Amazon and reviews from other sources will always be helpful in your search as these will help you determine which ones are good and which ones are duds.

Having said all that, here are some of my recommended mattresses and I will explain why I chose them.

Innerspring

Spring mattresses are still very common to this day and I still love them so I have one in my guest room. I sometime take a nap there and the mattress is still very comfortable.

The one that I recommend is the Dreamfoam Bedding Pocketed coil mattress. It costs a little over $500 and it is great for that price tag. It is 12 inches thick and it is made in the USA. As a bonus, it is a hybrid innerspring-memory foam mattress, meaning that the support system is made of coils and the comfort layer utilizes memory foam so you get the best of both worlds when it comes to this mattress.

The coils in the mattress are pocketed coils and there are 750 of them, which is a good number of springs in order to provide good support. I have had this mattress for over 4 years now and I must say, it holds up pretty good. It is still very comfortable and when I take a nap on it sometimes, I always wake up without any issues like back aches, numbing, shoulder pain etc. It is a great mattress for the price and if you want an innerspring, this should be on your list.

Memory Foam

Memory foam is my personal favorite. I have one that I use every night in my bedroom and it is the best for me. It is so comfortable with the way that it envelopes my body as I sleep. It is definitely one of the best purchases that I have ever made.

The memory foam that I recommend is the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze. It costs a little under $400 and it is quite surprising how a cheap mattress like this can be so wonderful. It is 12 inches thick and the foams have gone through something called CERTIPUR certification. I don’t really know about that but I’m guessing that it is a good thing. The memory foam in the mattress is 3 inches and it is called “gel memory foam” and it is supposed to help the mattress to stay cool. So far, I haven’t experienced any heat while I sleep so it must be doing its job.

This is a great mattress and I never would have considered buying it if it wasn’t for online reviews. It is very cheap and I don’t usually trust products that are cheap. However, reading some of the reviews about this mattress made me consider it and I eventually bought it because I was convinced of its good performance and I wanted to save some cash. It was a great decision.

Latex

Latex, I’m not really familiar with. I’ve only ever tried one and I don’t own it so I can’t really talk much about its quality. I once slept over at a friends house and his guest room bed had a latex mattress in it. It was great for the time I spent there and I actually asked my friend about it and he tells me that he really likes it and the one in his main bedroom is the same make and model.

This latex mattress is called the Roma latex mattress. It’s an all latex mattress that is quite expensive at over $700.  From what I tried, I liked it but I don’t think I’ll be buying it anytime soon just because it is too expensive for me but if you have the budget and you like latex, you should definitely have a look at it.

These three mattresses are what I consider to be the best when you are on a budget, at least from what I have owned and tried. Of course, there may be better mattresses out there but since I am not a professional reviewer, I can’t try them all. If you noticed, I don’t have a recommendation for air mattresses. The reason for that is that I haven’t owned one and have no plans of buying one in the near future. I think that air mattresses are very expensive, at least the ones that I know of that I think are worth buying. I only know of Sleep Number and if I am not mistaken, their beds cost thousands of dollars and I don’t have that kind of money.

Is Eating Rice Good for You?

I have recently been to Asia and I must say, they really love their rice! I mean it’s not a bad thing, just that living in the US my entire life, I have never been accustomed to eating rice everyday. I eat rice maybe once or twice a month and sometimes, I don’t even have it for more than a month. So eating rice almost everyday during my visit to Japan, I got curious about its health benefits and risks.

White rice does not contain gluten.

This is good news for me and others that are trying to eliminate or at least minimize gluten in their diet. As most of you may already know, gluten can cause so much health problems and it’s better if you try to eliminate it. This is especially true if you have gluten intolerance or gluten sensitive. White rice does not contain gluten so it is safe to eat and won’t cause any digestive problems for you.

It is very easy to digest.

Whole grains can be hard to digest due to phytic acid. In order for some grains to be easily digested, you have to properly prepare them before cooking by soaking and for some, fermenting, to release the bran. These can be bothersome if you just want to cook and eat and you don’t want to deal with these preparation methods. As for white rice, this is not a problem as the bran is already released so all you have to do is cook it and eat without having to worry about digestion.

Blood sugar levels and white rice.

White rice is high on the glycemic index and as such, it is always thought of as a food that can raise blood sugar level. However, one thing that is often omitted when discussing foods that are high on the glycemic index is that a food that is high on the list only affects the blood sugar level when eaten by itself. As we all know, it is very rare that rice is eaten without other foods. It is always accompanied by other foods such as meat, vegetables, broths and fat. From these, we can conclude that rice will not raise your blood sugar level, unless you eat it daily by itself but you won’t do that right?

As for now, I have included rice in my diet. I still don’t eat everyday but it is now a part of my weekly meal plan. It’s a good food that will let you feel full for longer plus it’s cheap so it will be very helpful in my efforts to save money.

Benefits of an 8 hour Sleep

Sleep plays a major role in our overall health and well-being. Studies show that a person that does not get at least 8 hours of sleep every night is at a greater risk of developing health issues like heart problems and weight problems.

Having said that, here are some of the reasons why getting enough amount of sleep should be everyone’s priority.

  • It reduces stress

Stress is something that most of us deal with and it will become worse if you are not getting the right amount of sleep. The body, when sleep deprived, is on edge and it will release stress hormones, putting you at a greater risk of developing heart problems and suffering strokes.

  • Heart problems

As mentioned above, lack of sleep can cause heart problems and strokes since your blood pressure level will rise as well as your cholesterol levels. Your heart will be much more healthy if you are getting the right amount of sleep.

  • Improved Memory

Getting a good quality sleep wherein you are in “a deep sleep” helps improve your memory. While your body is resting, the brain is working to make connections with what happened throughout your day.

  • Lose Weight

Losing weight is a goal for almost everyone I know and what I tell them is to get the right amount of sleep, which is around 8 hours. Sleep deprivation will cause hormonal imbalance in the body that can affect your appetite. Losing weight or maintaining your weight will depend on the amount of sleep that you can get.

  • Depression

Depression is something that has been a lot more common in recent times and we can correlate that with people not getting enough sleep due to demanding work or school hours. Serotonin is a “happy” chemical that the brain releases when you get enough sleep. Lack of sleep will result in this chemical not being released.

  • Overall well being

The body needs to repair itself after a long day of going through stress, battling the UV rays of the sun and pretty much everything that your body goes through. The only time that the body can repair itself without being interrupted is when you sleep so if you are not getting enough of it, the body will not be given the time to repair itself.

Sleep should be a priority for everyone. Everyone needs to take a break every now and then and if your work is demanding more time from you and sleep is sacrificed, you might want to think about the future repercussions of such job and if it is worth it to risk your health and well being for it.

Home Tools You Should Never be Without

Every homeowner should always have tools handy. It doesn’t have to be the most complete set of tools ever, you just have to have the basics, which are more than enough if you are only going to use it for simple maintenance or repairs around the house.

Investing in a tool box is always a good idea and you should always opt for one that is big and has enough room for future tools. You will fill it up eventually so why not just buy a spacious one at the start? As for the tools, you don’t have to buy the most expensive ones, just go with something that is reasonably priced but with good quality. These basic tools will be the most used and will be subject to more wear and tear so don’t buy cheap ones either.

Claw Hammer

A claw hammer for driving nails and prying is an essential part of a basic tool set. You should always go for one with a non-slip grip as it will be helpful in preventing accidents. The hammer’s weight should be balanced so try out as many as you can before deciding on which one to buy.

Pliers

Certain types of pliers are more suitable for specific jobs. Long nose pliers are great when working with wires while slip joint pliers are good for holding, bending and for tightening or loosening a nut.

Screwdriver Set

Used for driving screws so you will be needing this a lot. You can buy a set with removable tips but personally, I prefer the fixed type. Phillips and flat head screws are the most common so buy these in different sizes as you see fit.

Tape Measure

A tape measure is essential in your toolbox. From hanging portraits to measuring your room for furniture placement, a measuring tape will come in handy. You should buy the heavy duty type as it is more effective if you happen to be working by yourself. It can be extended further without the need for support.

Utility Knife

Used for slicing through any type of materials, it will come handy in most situations. You should always have extra sets of blades as a dull blade can be very dangerous.

Hacksaw

From cutting wood to slicing metal, a hacksaw is essential in your tool set. It can also cut through pvc pipe so it is essential in plumbing. You should always buy extra blades as dull blades can cause accidents.

Level

A simple level will be useful if you want to hang pictures, mirrors or even wall mount your TV in a perfect horizontal level. You should buy a level that can double as a ruler/straight edge.

Adjustable Wrench

Used for tightening and loosening bolts and also very useful with plumbing. You should buy something that doesn’t budge when you set the size as it can be very frustrating working with one that continually budges after setting the size.

These are the basic tools that you will need if you don’t plan on becoming a serious DIYer in the future. If you do want to try DIY, then you will need more tools than these and more power tools.

Traveling Alone

Do you want to travel but you are not sure if you can go by yourself? The thought of traveling alone is unbearable for some and I was one of them for the longest time. However, one day, I just went and booked a flight to Asia. Nothing’s going to happen if I don’t take action so I just did it.

As the day approached, I was anxious and nervous. I even wanted to cancel the flight but thankfully, I did not because it was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. After that, I constantly wonder and laugh at myself for not wanting to travel alone. I wish I did it sooner.

Traveling alone has many benefits and it will help you grow as a person. If you are having doubts about being a lone traveler, I would say that you should try it out but as a first step, you should go to a place that is safe for tourists as safety will allow you to be comfortable even if you don’t know anyone.

Here are some benefits of traveling alone.

You will meet other people more often

Yes, if you travel alone or with someone or in a group, meeting people is inevitable but it is more likely and more frequently when you are in your lonesome. This is because you will be easier to approach and the other party will not think that they are intruding since you are not with someone.

This can be a good thing because socialising is always good and you will learn something new everytime. Just be aware and prioritize safety, don’t let your guard down just because someone approached you nicely.

You control everything

Total control over what you want to do, where to go, where to eat, when to sleep and just about anything you can think of is bliss. You can spend the whole day however you want and no one will be able to stop you. If you are traveling with someone, you need to make plans together and you have to agree on just about anything before anything gets done and this can be a buzzkill.

You will less likely be stressed

Traveling with someone or in a group can be stressful if not all of you are on the same page. If someone oversleeps, the whole day will have to be adjusted or if someone gets sick, you will have to attend to them while they are incapacitated.

If you are alone, you will not have to account for someone else and this can lead to a stress free time.

Your wallet will thank you

Traveling alone will cost you less than if you were to bring someone else with you. You will be able to spend less on transportation, accommodations, meals and pretty much anything else. All of these expenses can add up fast if you are paying for two and if you are alone, you can use the savings to enjoy your getaway.

You will get to know yourself better

When we are at home, in our comfort zone, we rarely get to have some serious time to ourselves. There are so many distractions that we can indulge in that we rarely get to know our true selves. When you are in a foreign land and you don’t know anyone who you can depend on, you are left to depend on yourself.
You will get to know yourself much better on how you cope in different situations.

Traveling alone is something that everyone should do at least once in their lifetime. It’s a great experience that will be something that you will cherish for the entirety of your life.
